A Stronger Partnership
When Elina first joined the program, her household faced deep challenges. Her marriage with Simon, was marked by gender-based violence and a lack of shared decision-making. Elina felt isolated and powerless, unsure how to protect herself or improve her family’s farming livelihood, their main source of income.
Her turning point began when she and Simon started attending gender justice and social inclusion dialogue meetings in their community. Initially hesitant, they approached the sessions with caution. “It was difficult at first to talk about my home life,” Elina shared, “I didn’t know if change was possible, or if my husband would truly listen.”
The program’s facilitators and mentors, however, provided patient guidance, encouragement, and practical tools, helping the couple explore new ways to communicate, resolve conflicts, and make decisions together. Each session brought small but meaningful progress: they began discussing household plans, listening to each other, and sharing responsibilities on the farm.
A breakthrough came during a community Bible study and dialogue session focused on marital respect and gender equality. With support from their peers, Elina and Simon practiced applying what they had learned, confronting harmful patterns and reinforcing trust and partnership in their marriage. Elina reflected, “The lessons helped Simon and I realize that love is not about hurting each other. Hearing other couples’ experiences gave us hope and showed us that we could rebuild our marriage with respect and understanding.”
From that moment, Elina’s confidence grew. She actively participated in household decision-making, took part in Village Savings and Loan Association activities, and contributed ideas for improving their farm business. Her strengthened partnership with Simon improved their family’s food security, while the couple’s deepened faith guided them to embrace dignity, equality, and God’s love.
Today, Elina is no longer isolated. She engages confidently in her community, inspires other women and couples, and models the power of faith, partnership, and consistent support in overcoming challenges. Her journey demonstrates that with encouragement, guidance, and opportunity, even deeply rooted struggles can transform into lasting growth and empowerment.
