Mary’s Persistence Pays Off

Mary grew up in a humble but supportive home where her parents worked hard to educate their children. After completing secondary school in 2021, Mary faced uncertainty about her future. University education was not possible due to financial constraints, and for a time she remained at home unsure of her next step. When she learned about Jitokeze Wamama Wafrika she found hope in gaining practical skills and decided to enroll in hairdressing and beauty therapy with the support of her father.

At the training center, Mary proved to be committed, focused, and eager to learn. She quickly gained skills in braiding, twists, dreadlocks, manicure, pedicure, and customer care, while also building confidence in herself. After completing her training in June 2025, she worked as an intern at a salon in Bendera, where she gained hands-on experience and saved money to buy basic tools.

She took this experience and decided to start a business on a veranda in a nearby town. Unfortunately, the business was not a success because of competition and financial challenges.  But Mary remained determined and chose to try again. She returned home and carefully searched for a better location to start her business.

Her persistence paid off when she secured a small shop where she officially opened her salon in January 2026. Now she runs a growing business offering services such as braiding, weaving, retouching, dreadlocks, manicure, and pedicure. To increase her income, she also sells products like perfumes, clothes, shoes, and salon items, helping her build a more stable and sustainable livelihood.

Beyond her personal success, Mary is now making a difference in her community. She trains young girls and women in hairdressing skills, giving them an opportunity to become self-reliant. Her salon has become a welcoming space where customers feel comfortable and valued, and strong relationships have been built through mutual support. Mary’s journey reflects resilience, determination, and the impact of practical skills, showing that with the right opportunity and mindset, young people can overcome challenges and create meaningful change in their lives and communities.
