Shared Efforts Bring Shared Success
In 2024, Mr. Antonio joined the hands-on horticulture program introduced by local partner FUSONA because he saw potential in learning as much as he could about improved farming techniques. He and his family depend on farming rice and vegetables for their livelihood, so acquiring best practices seemed like a good way to support his loved ones.
He was soon elected head of the demonstration-plot group he belonged to. His dedication made him a role model in the community, especially for young people, whom he mentored in improved farming techniques.
Despite the unpredictability of weather conditions, the group was successful in producing good results in their plot. They received material support from Church World Service and FUSONA, including vegetable seeds, chickens, and training in farming and raising poultry. His group saw a significant boost in productivity. In a community where many households make $1 a day, the fact that their latest vegetable harvest generated $50 in income represented a meaningful increase that directly benefited the community.
Beyond financial gains, the training on poultry farming and structured planting empowered families. Income from vegetable sales was used to meet household needs, repair water sources, and purchase seeds for future planting.
Encouraged by this success, Mr. Antonio expanded his home vegetable garden, further promoting sustainable farming among his peers. His wife emphasized the importance of continuing such programs to ensure ongoing learning and community development.
Expressing his gratitude for the intervention by FUSONA, Mr. Antonio said, “This project has truly changed our lives. I hope it continues to support other vulnerable communities so they, too, can benefit as we have.”
