Women Farmers Group Becomes Community Institution
The Janali Farmers Group was established in 2022 when 11 women came together as part of the India Dimoria program to learn and save together.
What began with monthly savings of 50 INR ($0.53) per member has grown into a strong community institution with shared assets of INR 85,000 ($897). Through regular meetings, transparent record-keeping, and financial discipline, the group has strengthened members’ confidence and collective decision-making.
They have expanded beyond savings to promote health, sustainable agriculture, and livelihoods. All children of members are fully immunized, while training on vermicomposting has encouraged eco-friendly farming practices. Through their group labor system, members support each other’s farm activities, contributing INR 50 ($0.53) per day to the group fund.
A loan of INR 50,000 ($528) from the Rural Livelihood Mission enabled members to invest in poultry, goat rearing, shops, and kitchen gardens, improving household income and food security. Since 2024, the group also initiated a bi-annual village cleanliness drive, encouraging wider community participation, and promoting shared responsibility for environmental protection.
The journey of Janali Farmers Group demonstrates how regular saving, mutual support, local ownership and collective action can build resilient communities and create lasting improvements in livelihoods and well-being.
India Dimoria is led by World Renew and local partner North East India Committee on Relief and Development (NEICORD)
