Success Stories
Yojana’s Harvest
In rural communities in the highlands of Guatemala, families are improving their nutrition through poultry production and home gardens.
During this first year of the program, chickens have entered the laying phase, providing households with a regular source of eggs for consumption and, in some cases, generating income through surplus sales. This effort is significantly improving access to protein while reducing household food costs.
Yojana is a 26-year-old mother who has seen the fruits of participating in the program. She has been able to harvest cabbage, carrots, cilantro, radishes, tomatillos, jalapeño peppers, and bell peppers from her garden. She is also harvesting radish and cilantro seeds from the same garden.
“I learned a lot about how to care for a garden and how to obtain good quality compost. We also learned how to build a chicken coop and how to care for free-range chickens,” Yojana shared. She has been able to collect five eggs daily from her chicken coop. “We eat them and I sell them to some people who always look for local eggs. In these past two months, I’ve managed to earn Q800.00 ($106) by selling eggs and some vegetables.”
Yojana enjoys taking care of the chickens with her 6-year-old daughter. “My daughter is the happiest; she tells me: ‘The chicks are mine, and the hens are yours.’ She helps me a lot by taking care of them, and I feel satisfied seeing my daughter happy.”
“These projects have helped us improve our diet. They have been a great blessing because we no longer buy vegetables or eggs; we simply go to the garden and the chicken coop and obtain the food we need. We have understood very well how important it is to produce your own healthy food,” she reflects. “I want to express my gratitude for this support and help we have received; it has been a great blessing. May God bless those who have provided the financial resources to bless us.”
