Program Summary
Food security is one of the most pressing challenges for rural indigenous communities in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, where poverty, inequality, and the deterioration of natural resources have historically limited the right to adequate food.
This program works to empower local community groups to improve the food security and nutrition of their families. The community groups work together to diversify their crop and livestock production, implement soil and water conservation practices, establish seed reserves, improve access to community markets, and transform community and school spaces into environments that promote healthy diets. The program is implemented in two micro-regions of Totonicapán.
