Program Summary

The Mexican state of Chiapas has abundant natural wealth, but as a result of social and political factors, most rural families face extreme poverty. There are few opportunities for employment and farming is challenging. Most families lack access to water and training on agricultural techniques. This program is working to strengthen production systems that promote a good quality of life in indigenous communities in the Highlands of Chiapas.

This program empowers women through training workshops on human rights, spiritual growth, healthy eating, financial literacy, and savings groups to strengthen social participation, economic independence, and living conditions. Communities are implementing sustainable practices and increasing access to water through ecotechnologies, including composting toilets, eco-stoves, water filters, rainwater harvesting, and reforestation efforts. Training and exchanges on diversified gardens, silvopastoral systems, and other agroecological practices help communities create resilient production systems that contribute to food sovereignty.
