Meet Our Spring Intern

Hi there! I’m Abby Werner, and I am a junior studying Strategic Communication: Public Relations and Political Science at the University of Missouri, but I’m from the Dallas area. This semester I am in Washington, D.C. participating in the Journalism School’s Internship Program. I will be working 30 hours a week with Growing Hope Globally and attending weekly seminars at the National Press Building.

I was initially attracted to Growing Hope because of the emphasis on creating lasting solutions for global communities in need. I also like how each program has a slightly different focus. I’m passionate about issues like women’s empowerment, education, climate change and access to healthcare- and many of the international agricultural development programs tie more specifically into those kinds of issues. And with the addition of the COVID-19 pandemic, finding solutions for world hunger is even more important.

I see this internship as an opportunity to build on a variety of communication skills- some writing, research, content creation, strategic planning, etc. After graduation, I plan on pursuing a career in non-profit communications, so I am very excited for this hands-on experience with Growing Hope. I expect this semester to come with lots of professional and personal growth, and I am grateful for the opportunity.
