“The World’s Perfect Food” is Perfect for These Children
An ad campaign for the nutrient-rich banana calls it “the world’s perfect food.” A baby step toward self-sufficiency for families in the Rwanda Rubavu program involves growing bananas for a fast turnaround on nutrition for children.
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries’ (NCM) Child Development Centers had been seeing an increase in children being left at the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo as their parents cross over looking for work. These children have been integrated into Development Center activities and bananas are already improving their health. In order to feed the children and keep families together, the program is designed to employ and train their parents in agriculture. Bananas were chosen for their quick growth, nutritional value for even the smallest of children, and as a source of income. NCM is supporting families in starting kitchen gardens by providing banana seeds.
